Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Food distribution systems are critical in ensuring that communities have access to adequate nutrition, particularly in areas prone to conflict and instability. In Shani Local Government Area (LGA), Borno State, food distribution is influenced by geopolitical factors such as security concerns, local governance, and regional political alignments. Shani LGA is situated in a region that has been severely impacted by insurgency and insecurity, which complicates food distribution efforts and creates disparities in access to food (Musa & Bello, 2023). Geopolitical factors such as the role of local government, ethnic and religious divisions, and the political affiliations of food aid organizations play a crucial role in the efficiency and fairness of food distribution systems.
The ongoing conflict in Borno State has disrupted agricultural activities and food supply chains, leading to food shortages and increased dependence on external aid. The political climate and local governance capacity influence the way resources are allocated and distributed, often resulting in unequal access to food for different communities (Mustapha & Aliyu, 2024). This study aims to investigate how geopolitical factors impact food distribution systems in Shani LGA and to identify ways to improve the resilience of food supply chains in conflict-affected areas.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Food distribution in Shani LGA is heavily influenced by geopolitical factors, including insecurity, political interests, and local governance structures. These factors contribute to the inequitable distribution of food, especially in conflict-affected areas. This study seeks to investigate how these geopolitical factors impact food distribution systems in Shani LGA and provide recommendations to improve food security in the region.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
1.4 Research Questions
1.5 Research Hypothesis
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide valuable insights into the geopolitical factors that impact food distribution systems in Shani LGA, Borno State. The findings will help local government authorities, humanitarian organizations, and policymakers develop strategies to ensure equitable food distribution and improve food security in conflict-affected areas. This research will also contribute to the broader discussion on the role of governance and conflict in shaping food security policies in Nigeria.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to Shani LGA in Borno State and focuses on food distribution systems, considering the impact of governance, security, and political factors. Limitations include the difficulty of accessing remote areas affected by conflict and potential biases in reporting from local officials and aid organizations.
